Elbow Falls, Burgers, Beer and Cigars

Elbow Falls, Burgers, Beer and Cigars

Hanging out at Elbow Falls

Great day hanging out with Yvonne’s son Spencer.  He took us out for a drive to Elbow Falls, one of our favourite spots in the area.

Water was pretty low.  Melt from the mountains hasn’t really gotten going yet.  The whole area of the river is still stones and gravel from the 2013 flooding.  Might take decades or longer for vegetation to build up to the river’s edge again.  Plenty of trails from here.  Not that we did any serious hiking.  If you want to go up the highway further you have to wait a few days.  On the 15th they open the gate and you can get through to Forgetmenot Pond - that whole strip is absolutely gorgeous.  There were some cyclists going up and down - it’s brutal going up, we’ve walked it.

Then back to his place for burgers and beer.  And cigars.

Calgary – Glenmore Reservoir and Weaselhead

Calgary – Glenmore Reservoir and Weaselhead

We’ve spent the last few days in Calgary. Then a couple more before heading out to British Columbia.

Visiting grandkids.  We spent some time the other afternoon and evening with Yvonne’s son and wife.  They live in a great spot overlooking the Stampede grounds.  And the downtown area.  You can see the photo from the park looking out here.

One of our favourite places when we lived here was Glenmore Reservoir and Weaselhead.  Lots of wildlife and great hikes.  I often circled the reservoir on my bike.  A seriously good workout coming back up the hill.

Whoever is responsible for this keeps the reservoir low at this time of year so it doesn’t flood.  There is still lots of snow in the mountains that will melt fast over the next few weeks.  Lots of birds and I got a few shots of the herons.  Gulls were noisy.

WURST Restaurant and Beer Hall in Calgary

WURST has reopened.  This authentic German beer hall has reopened after being damaged and closed from the flooding last June.  Get out of the cold and enjoy a beer made in accordance with the “German Beer Purity Law”.  (No additives and such.)  And good wholesome comfort food.

Thrill Calgary – Michael Jackson’s Thriller at Eau Claire

Here are a couple of photos of Thrill Calgary – the practice, the performance and some of the costumes.

This event was put on by Thrill Calgary along with hundreds of cities around the world with the goal of getting food donations for the Interfaith Food Bank.  Trying to break the record of the number of registered participants.  Not sure if they made it but it was a blast watching them.
